Buy Your Very Own Lighthouse

I get updates from Historic Properties when new properties are listed. When I opened my email and saw the following set of listings, I couldn't help but notice all the lighthouses; and lighthouses are not something I've ever seen listed before, so to see so many was even more of a surprise.

These lighthouses reminded me of a movie I saw recently and the name of it escapes me.  There was a conservative man and a free-spirited woman who met each other and fell in love.  They each had a lot of children and they got married and moved into a lighthouse.

If you've ever wanted to own your own lighthouse, here's your opportunity.  Each one of them is to be sold by bid with a minimum starting bid of $10,000 or $20,000.  I wonder what they'll sell for in the end.  Here's the information for each one.

SimoneSmith, I know. I love that comma too. Kind Regards

I just got an update from Preservation Magazine, the official publication of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, on Facebook. They responded to my hub saying that the government sells lighthouses every summer.

So, good news, folks (and me too). If you can't buy one this summer, there will be future years of lighthouses.

That is so cool. I just read an article in a magazine about a couple that lives in a lighthouse a few months out of each year. This would be great for someone who enjoys solitude.

There's another lighthouse that just listed that's in Maine. You've got to go see the photo of it with the waves crashing up to nearly the top of it. I think that would be more excitement than I could handle! It's here: http://www.historicproperties.com/detail.asp?detai

Thank you all for your comments.

Living in a lighthouse, will allow plenty of time for hubbing, I suppose. Never knew they will be on sale, and thought it is the responsibilty of authorities to maintain and upkeep them. I think private ownership is a brilliant idea to save taxpayers money. It also gives opportunity for the romantic dreamers to have a place like this. It must be fun, in some sort of way!

Sooo cool KR, the one that has 1500 sq ft of living space sounds very manageable and superhero hangout material. I'm writing a murder mystery that takes place in a historic bank in my city that opened in 1929 with a lighthouse on top. (Still operational) =:)

Beautiful Hub! I had no idea that one could buy a lighthouse. I am not from a coastal city so this could be why we have no listing:) These look incredible..would make for great vacation home. Do you know of any that have been rennovated for this purpose?

Kind Regards profile image

Kind Regards Hub Author 19 months ago

kids-toy-box, No, I don't know about any renovated lighthouses, but I'm sure there are folks who have done just that and they likely look amazing. My research centered around the ones for sale, so that's all I was looking at. Kind Regards

Thank you for your comment and the fanmail!

Great Hub and I never knew they sold Lighthouses. Wow I would love to own one of those. It would be awesome living in one too. I have a small collection of different lighthouses and the one I learned to love is The Barnaget Lighthouse on Long Beach Island New Jersey. I grew up on the Island a love that Lighthouse. The prices are very reasonable too. Thanks for sharing this hub with all of us.
